About the Lab

Lab Culture

For the Love of Science & Worms

At the Sivaramakrishnan lab, we care about every individual’s voice. We embrace diversity and community, and welcome anyone with a love for science and worms!

Just as development is a sum of a parts list, our lab will be a representation of all our team members. We want to hear everyone’s ideas—no questions too small or irrelevant.

Principal Investigator

Priya Sivaramakrishnan, PhD.

I grew up in the South of India and came to the United States to do my graduate work in the Christophe Herman Lab at Baylor College of Medicine.

During my PhD. I studied how bacterial RNA polymerase is regulated to prevent conflicts with other DNA-centric processes, replication and DNA repair.

I then moved to the University of Pennsylvania to do my postdoc with John Murray, beginning my journey towards understanding how transcription dynamics are regulated during embryonic cell fate specification, using the nematode worm, C. elegans as a model.

As a postdoc, I have served as a leader for the Genetics Gender Equity Group and the co-president of the Penn Postdoctoral Association (PPA). I see immense value in students and postdocs finding their communities in their research institutions and continue to support the living and training experience for all.

Location

Philadelphia, PA:
A City of Innovation and Rich History

We <3 Philly! It’s a city that offers something for everyone. Here are some of our lab member’s hobbies to give you a taste of what you can do in the city:

Running/biking on the  Schuylkill River Trail (SRT): The SRT extends for 120 miles through the heart of the city. Its perfect for half/full marathon training (scenic yet flat-ish trail with several water fountains), picnics (lots of covered lawn areas—perfect for a lazy day of data analysis) and hosts a variety of work out classes (perfectly-synced yoga poses are a sight to behold) and pop-up beer gardens.

Hiking in the Wissahickon: Wissahickon Valley Park has multiple hiking and biking trails that are particularly beautiful in the fall. This huge park system is a hidden gem that’s right in the middle of the city.

Food: Priya’s favorite restaurant is a neighborhood Mexican joint called Los Camarades. Their guac and meatless nachos are fantastic!
